The Job Hunt Playbook That Actually Works
How to find companies where your experience is a perfect fit.
If your job search strategy is still “spray and pray,” you’ve already lost.
You can apply to 100 jobs a week. Pray to the LinkedIn gods. But none of it matters if you’re not relevant to the job you’re applying for.
And I say that with love.
Because as a recruiter who’s screened thousands of candidates, I see this every single day: smart, hungry, capable people getting ghosted.
Why? Because their background doesn’t match the buyer, business model, or environment of the companies they’re applying to. Not even close.
Then they say: “The market’s dead.”
No, the market isn’t dead. You’re not aligned.
Most job seekers are stuck in fantasyland
They think:
“I’ve done sales, I can sell anything.”
“Marketing is marketing, right?”
“Startups love people from big tech!”
Wrong, wrong, and wrong again.
Startups want startup people. B2B wants B2B. If a company sells to HR, they want someone who understands HR buyers. It’s that simple.
I have some sympathy (I know, not my style) — most of the time, they won’t even write that on the job description. They’ll say they’re “open to all backgrounds.” But I’ve been in those hiring calls. They’re not. Trust me.
So what should you do?
Stop being generic.
Start being strategic.
Here’s the playbook that actually works — the one almost no one uses.
And no, it’s not about applying to 1,000 jobs.
It’s about applying to 20 jobs that are actually a match.
